This uniquely numbered certificate recognizes your participation in NativeEnergy's CO2 offset program.
Here's how it works - Burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas for electricity produces air pollution and greenhouse gases like CO2. So does heating our homes with oil, propane or natural gas. Add it up and the average U.S. household is responsible for about 12 tons of CO2 emissions each year - just to stay warm and keep the lights on.1
The more wind turbines and other renewable energy projects we build, the less energy we'll need from power plants that burn coal, oil and natural gas, and the less fossil fuel will be burned. Some renewable energy projects also prevent emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. By causing less fossil fuel to be burned and less methane emitted, renewable energy projects create direct environmental benefits, the most important being that less CO2 and other greenhouse gases are emitted into our atmosphere. The problem is that these projects generally costs a bit more than the alternatives, principally the continued use of fossil fuels. Before building these renewable energy projects, developers must find a way to cover their extra costs. To get the extra revenues they need, some sell the rights to claim the CO2 reductions created by the projects, known as "carbon offsets". On behalf of our customers, we use our patent-pending business process to buy - in advance - the carbon offsets to be generated by a renewable energy project over a period equal to its conservatively estimated project life. This provides critically important up-front financial support and so helps get these new renewable energy projects up and running.
We donate our customers' carbon offsets to Clean Air-Cool Planet, an independent non-profit environmental organization focused on the fight against global warming. Clean Air-Cool Planet promises to accept your carbon offsets and to make sure the CO2 emissions reductions generated by "your" are not resold to anyone who could use them instead of having to reduce their own emissions. They'll do this by "retiring" your carbon offsets, which means that they will not use them, sell them or give them away, for any purpose, except to the extent necessary or advisable to effect their retirement, such as transferring them to a government agency for retirement.
The unique serial number on this certificate corresponds to our records of the quantity of CO2 offsets you purchased or will be purchasing on a monthly basis, and the project or projects you chose to help build.
Congratulations! Your purchase is fighting climate change by helping build a new renewable energy project and keeping CO2 out of the air. For more details, please visit our web site at www.nativeenergy.com.
